Brechin Artifacts – A Visible Community Business
By Sam Laskaris
There’s no denying that Brechin Artifacts is one of the most visible businesses in the community.
For starters, the business is located on 2256 Highway 12, just south of Brechin’s main intersection.
Brechin Artifacts, which opened its doors in 2002, stands out because of its massive display of stone statues and yard ornaments, primarily on the outside front of the store. Displays are also located inside and behind the store as well.
A decreased speed limit and railway tracks running through the community near the store also make Brechin Artifacts hard to miss.
But Jackie Bryer, who owns the business, said most of her sales are not people simply driving through town who are intrigued and pop into the store.
“The majority of customers are not necessarily drive-bys,” she said, adding she has many return customers, some of which drive great distances to shop at her business.
Bryer believes her store is also beneficial for other businesses in the community, adding many of those out-of-town customers who venture to Brechin Artifacts will possibly purchase gas in the community or perhaps stick around for a meal.
“I get 3,500 customers go through the store every year, which is very good for Brechin,” Bryer said. “People come from all over to buy stuff at my store.”
Brechin Artifacts’ inventory includes more than 1,500 statues.
And it is not just adults who are making purchases that get to enjoy their time while at the business.
The store’s backyard includes a section featuring live chickens, ducks, roosters and a bullfrog sanctuary.
“What people love to do are bring the kids and they get entertained as well,” said Bryer, who was born in Vancouver but has lived in Brechin since opening up her business 17 years ago.
Brechin Artifacts traditionally opens each year during the month of April and stays open until the end of December.
The store is open five days a week and is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
But Bryer, who lives in the 1930s built property which includes her home, said many regular customers know her by name. Thus, even when the business is closed people will drop by, especially if they have a particular purchase in mind. If she’s around, Bryer will accommodate them.
“I will open up for them,” she said.
